Francis Ngannou is nicknamed "The predator" for several reasons: first, his strikes. Ngannou has exhibited a tremendous amount of power in his strikes. He is probably one of the hardest punchers in MMA. Facing the predator in the ring is risking it to get a one-punch knockout power referred to by legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas as "the eraser, a weapon that wipes away all of one’s previous mistakes with one blow."
Secondly, his imposing size and weight. Ngannou's weight is 262.5 pounds and has a height of 6 feet 4 inches, the bulk required to make an impression and win a fight.
And then comes his unique ability to strategize. He aggressively attacks his victim, infusing fear - such torture. You never know what might hit you when it hits you. When you think you've got it all figured out, the predator shows up.
Regardless of the opponent, a powerful strike is essential for Francis Ngannou. This was supposed to be his superior advantage in the UFC 270 heavyweight belt fight with Cyril Gane, the fighter nicknamed "Bon gamin" [Good kid] but whose muscular structure and martial ability suggests anything but a good kid.
Fernand Lopez, Gane's current coach and Ngannou's former coach, believed that his time as Ngannou's trainer had given him an understanding of the predator's style. He also thought that with Gane’s clean and unbeatable record, agility in the ring, and precision in his strikes, Ngannou stood no chance against his current trainee. Unfortunately for Lopez, fate had written a different story: Ngannou would defeat the unbeatable, and Gane's flawless timeline would be marred. Meanwhile, Lopez would wallow in defeat, trying to figure out what had happened. If Lopez was trying to prove a point, we will say he got what he deserved.
A homeless man who literally fought for his life
Winning a fight has always been Ngannou’s story. Homeless at 26 years of age, Ngannou needed to brace up for a fight against his first and major opponent, poverty. Born in Batie, in the Western Region of Cameroon, Francis Ngannou did not have the same opportunities for education as other kids. Rather, at the tender age of 10, he began working at a sand quarry to earn a living. Due to his lack of formal education and early efforts at earning a living, Ngannou received several requests from thugs in his neighbourhood to join their gangs. At the age of 22, he decided to train as a boxer in order to be better than his street fighter father, a decision that was not well received by his family. A year later, Ngannou was forced to stop training as a boxer due to ill health.
Dissatisfied with the lack of opportunity for him to pursue his career as a boxer in Cameroon, Ngannou decided to relocate to France, where he believed he would thrive. With resolve, the then 26-year old Ngannou took up an illegal journey to France, going through Spain. While in Spain, he was held in prison for two months for illegally entering the territory. After his release from prison, he made it to his dream country. In France, Ngannou found himself homeless, penniless, and frustrated. However, fate smiled on the young and ambitious Ngannou, who happened to meet the man who would introduce him to a world of endless possibilities. This man’s name was Fernand Lopez.
Fernand Lopez, a Cameroonian born and ex-martial artist, took Ngannou off the streets, provided him with shelter, and gave him a free place to train in his gym called MMA Factory. Although Ngannou’s wish was to do boxing, Lopez encouraged him to take on a career in mixed martial arts (MMA) instead.
The failure to conquer MMA's crown and the fracture between the protector and his protege
Ngannou competed in his first MMA competition after only a year of training, and he won. Ngannou will go on to win four of his next five fights, establishing himself as a valuable asset in French MMA. He fought in regional European promotions, mostly in France, and won every fight. In 2015, Ngannou signed in for the UFC championship while still under the guidance of Lopez. Two years later, he faced Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight belt and lost all five rounds to him. Later on in the same year, Ngannou fought Derrick Lewis and lost again, this time being ridiculed by the press for being a part of the worst fight ever to go down in the history of the UFC. This fight was dubbed "the snooze fest" by the fan base.
The defeat against Lewis is thought to be one of the reasons that contributed to the disagreements between Ngannou and Lopez that led to their fallout and split in 2019. Ngannou accused Lopez of only wanting to be famous, while Lopez accused Ngannou of not being grateful to MMA Factory or giving credit to his coaches. Whatever the reason, it was later realised that both parties could no longer work together.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Lopez states the reason for their split as;
"You pay me 10 percent. On top of the 10, you ask me to pay the sparring partner with that money that you give me. On top of that, you’re saying that would be a shame to know that a big name like you is paying the membership. You know how much is the membership in a year? Imagine. €600 per year. And he said, ‘No I will not pay.’ So I said, ‘You know what? You don’t listen to me anymore when I’m giving the class. You choose the easy way to train. Please, let’s just split.’ And we did."
Ngannou, on the other hand, had this to say;
"Fernand and I, we had our ups and downs. We always did since Day 1. We always disagreed on stuff. But he has his dream, I have my own. So I moved on."
Finally on the roof of MMA and conquering the United States
After his separation with Lopez, Ngannou permanently moved the United States in search of greater opportunities and challenges. While there, he continued to climb the UFC ladder and made history in 2021 during his rematch with Stipe Miocic, defeating the champion by knockout in the second round. Ngannou made a name for himself as the first African to win the MMA World Heavyweight Championship. From there on, it was an endless spiral of breakthroughs as he became a favourite of the MMA fanbase, and carved out a place among the Hollywood stars. Ngannou has so far acted in two movies, including the ninth installment in the famous Fast and Furious franchise.
The MMA fight of the century
The night of January 22, 2022, was one of the greatest moments so far in Ngannou’s UFC career. It was an evening of reckoning between "Bon gamin" and "The predator". For obvious reasons, the pinnacle fight between the two heavyweights was dubbed the biggest fight in UFC's MMA history.
The predator had established his hold in the UFC as the indisputable champion following his stunning knockout against Stipe Miocic. Bon gamin, on the other hand, had a clean sheet of victories and was now bearing the interim heavyweight belt following an outstanding fight with Derrick Lewis, against whom Ngannou had shortly before refused to contend.
Ngannou is well known for his powerful strikes, something that is unquestionably necessary for every heavyweight contender. The predator is said to have the most bewilderingly powerful strike in UFC history. On the other hand, Ciryl Gane is noted for his precision. The undefeated Frenchman integrates a Muay Thai-style form of striking with agile movements on the feet. Most people argued that even though power is required, precision is better. The battle for supremacy between power and precision was something that everyone was going to witness.
Ngannou and Gane were both trained by fernand Lopez and had, on a few occasions, trained together at MMA Factory in Paris. The drama and existing beef between Fernand Lopez and Francis Ngannou made the match even more thrilling for the fanbase and much more anticipated.
Ngannou's complete ignoring of Gane backstage at the UFC 268 game in Madison Square Garden, New York, also hiked up things a little, sparking heavy speculations among the eager fanbase who anticipated a bloody match intended to settle scores.
In the clash between Ngannou and Gane, the unexpected happened. Fans of The predator and the MMA world at large expected Ngannou to win using his signature power strike. However, this was not the case. Gane's renowned technical skills and fluid movements made The predator’s strike impossible to achieve. He spent the first two rounds of the fight attempting to override the Ganes' technique, but to no avail. However, in the third round, Ngannou changed strategy and went in for the takedowns. This change in strategy destabilised Bon gamin, securing The predator’s superiority for the next three rounds. By the fifth round, Ngannou had ruined Gane's unbeaten record, winning the match and retaining his title as the unbeatable UFC heavyweight champion. Ngannou’s victory came by unanimous decision from all three judges, who ruled at 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47 in his favour. This was the champion's first victory based on a judges' decision, but it was a great victory nonetheless. The predator's sense of euphoria and greatness was intense. He is at the top, he is the best and he has proven so.
Another fight outside the octagon
However, Ngannou’s joy is tempered by his dissatisfaction with his current UFC contract. One might believe that being at the top of the MMA world entails having everything. However, there appears to be an intense dispute between The predator and UFC president Dana White over the terms of his contract. Even before his championship defending game with Gane, Ngannou had expressed his dissatisfaction with the terms of his present contract, which gives no room for promotion or freedom to engage in other sporting activities such as his beloved boxing. The contention between the two seems great, as in UFC 270, Dana White failed to make his usual appearance after the match to wrap the belt around the winner's waist. White was equally absent for the press conference after the game.
As of today, updates about the controversy surrounding the contract have not been released, implying The Predator is expected to continue with the terms of the contract up until December 2022, when it is expected to end. Whether he will continue with the UFC or move on to fulfil his longtime dream of being a boxer, time will tell.
Despite the ups and downs, one thing stands: Ngannou is indisputably the unbeatable heavyweight champion of MMA. He has established over and over again his superiority in the MMA world. He is an inspiration to several who dare to dream of making it big in the martial arts. Francis Ngannou’s life story shows fate can rewrite the story of one who dares to dream and never gives up. It also affirms the endless truth that one must allow their pain to have purpose. Francis Ngannou, in a statement to the press about his success, said;
“I don't think I'm successful because I'm a UFC champion or because I have a house or because I have a car. My perception of success is because I never gave up.”

Quel que soit l'adversaire, un coup puissant est essentiel pour Francis Ngannou. C'était censé être son principal avantage dans le combat UFC 270 pour la ceinture des poids lourds contre Cyril Gane, le combattant surnommé "Bon gamin" mais dont la structure musculaire et l'habilité martiale laisse penser à tout sauf à un bon gamin.
Fernand Lopez, l'entraîneur actuel de Gane et ancien entraîneur de Ngannou, pensait que son passé d'entraîneur de Ngannou lui avait permis de comprendre le style du prédateur. Un sans-abri qui s'est littéralement battu pour sa vie
Gagner un combat a toujours été l'histoire de Ngannou. Sans-abri à 26 ans, Ngannou a dû se préparer à un combat contre son premier et principal adversaire, la pauvreté. Né à Batié, dans la région de l'Ouest du Cameroun, Francis Ngannou n'a pas eu les mêmes opportunités d'éducation que les autres enfants. Au contraire, à l'âge de 10 ans, il a commencé à travailler dans une carrière de sable pour gagner sa vie. Du fait de son manque d'éducation formelle et de ses efforts pour gagner sa vie, Ngannou était invité par plusieurs voyous de son quartier à rejoindre leurs gangs. À l'âge de 22 ans, il a décidé de prendre des cours de boxe afin d'être meilleur que son père combattant de rue, une décision qui n'a pas été bien accueillie par sa famille. Un an plus tard, Ngannou était contraint d'arrêter son entraînement de boxeur en raison de problèmes de santé.
Insatisfait du manque d'opportunités pour lui de poursuivre sa carrière de boxeur au Cameroun, Ngannou a décidé d'immigrer en France, où il pensait pouvoir s'épanouir. Avec détermination, Ngannou, alors âgé de 26 ans, a entrepris un voyage clandestin vers la France, en passant par l'Espagne. Durant son séjour en Espagne, il a été emprisonné pendant deux mois pour être entré illégalement sur le territoire. A sa sortie de prison, il s'est rendu dans le pays de ses rêves. En France, Ngannou s'est retrouvé sans-abri, sans un sou et frustré. Cependant, le destin a souri au jeune et ambitieux Ngannou, qui a rencontré l'homme qui allait lui faire découvrir un monde de possibilités infinies. Cet homme s'appelait Fernand Lopez.
Fernand Lopez, un camerounais d'origine et ancien maître d'arts martiaux, a sorti Ngannou de la rue, lui a fourni un abri et lui a donné une place gratuite pour s'entraîner dans son gymnase appelé MMA Factory. Bien que le souhait de Ngannou était de faire de la boxe, Lopez l'a encouragé à entreprendre une carrière dans les arts martiaux mixtes (MMA) à la place.
L'échec à conquérir la couronne du MMA et la fracture entre le protecteur et son protégé

Il est pensé que la défaite contre Lewis est l'une des raisons qui ont contribué aux désaccords entre Ngannou et Lopez qui ont conduit à leur rupture et à leur séparation en 2019. Ngannou accusait Lopez de vouloir uniquement être célèbre, tandis que Lopez accusait Ngannou de ne pas être reconnaissant envers MMA Factory ou de ne pas donner du crédit à ses entraîneurs. Quelle que soit la raison, on s'est rendu compte plus tard que les deux parties ne pouvaient plus travailler ensemble.
Dans une interview avec Ariel Helwani, Lopez a expliqué la raison de leur séparation comme étant :

Ngannou, d'autre part, avait ceci à dire :
« Fernand et moi, nous avons eu des hauts et des bas. Nous en avons toujours eu depuis le premier jour. Nous étions toujours en désaccord sur des choses. Mais il a son rêve, j'ai le mien. Alors je suis passé à autre chose. »
Enfin sur le toit du MMA et à la conquête des États-Unis
Après sa séparation avec Lopez, Ngannou a définitivement déménagé aux États-Unis à la recherche de plus grandes opportunités et défis. Là-bas, il a continué à gravir les échelons de l'UFC et est entré dans l'histoire en 2021 lors de son match revanche contre Stipe Miocic, battant le champion par KO au deuxième tour. Ngannou s'est fait un nom en tant que premier Africain à remporter le championnat du monde des poids lourds de MMA. À partir de ce moment, ce fut une spirale sans fin de succès, alors qu'il devenait l'un des favoris des fans de MMA, et qu'il s'arrachait une place parmi les stars de Hollywood. Ngannou a jusqu'à présent joué dans deux films, dont le neuvième opus de la célèbre franchise Fast and Furious.
Le combat de MMA du siècle
La nuit du 22 janvier 2022 a été l'un des plus grands moments de la carrière de Ngannou à l'UFC. C'était une soirée de comptes à rendre entre "Bon gamin" et "Le prédateur". Pour des raisons évidentes, le combat au sommet entre les deux poids lourds a été surnommé le plus grand combat de l'histoire du MMA à l'UFC.

Ngannou et Gane ont tous deux été entraînés par Fernand Lopez et s'étaient, à quelques reprises, entraînés ensemble à la MMA Factory à Paris. Le drame et la querelle existants entre Fernand Lopez et Francis Ngannou rendaient le match encore plus excitant pour les fans et très attendu.
L'ignorance totale de Gane par Ngannou dans les coulisses du match de l'UFC 268 au Madison Square Garden à New York, a également un peu survoleté les choses, suscitant de fortes spéculations parmi les fans impatients qui anticipaient un match sanglant destiné à régler des comptes.
Lors de l'affrontement entre Ngannou et Gane, l'inattendu s'est produit. Les fans du prédateur et du monde du MMA dans son ensemble s'attendaient à ce que Ngannou gagne en utilisant son coup puissant. Cependant, cela n'a pas été le cas. Un autre combat en dehors de l'octogone

Cependant, il semble y avoir un intense différend entre Le prédateur et le président de l'UFC, Dana White, sur les termes de son contrat. Avant même son match pour défendre le titre de champion contre Gane, Ngannou avait exprimé son mécontentement quant aux termes de son contrat actuel, qui ne laisse aucune place à la promotion ni à la liberté de se livrer à d'autres activités sportives telles que sa bien-aimée boxe. Le désaccord entre les deux semble grand, car lors de l'UFC 270, Dana White n'a pas fait son apparition habituelle après le match pour enrouler la ceinture autour de la taille du vainqueur. White était également absent pour la conférence de presse d'après-match.
À ce jour, aucune mise à jour sur la controverse entourant le contrat n'a été publiée, ce qui implique que Le prédateur devrait poursuivre les termes du contrat jusqu'en décembre 2022, date à laquelle il devrait se terminer. Qu'il continue avec l'UFC ou qu'il passe à la réalisation de son rêve de longue date d'être boxeur, le temps nous le dira.
Malgré les hauts et les bas, une certitude demeure : Ngannou est indiscutablement le champion invaincu de poids lourd de MMA. Il a établi à maintes reprises sa supériorité dans le monde du MMA. Il est une source d'inspiration pour plusieurs qui osent rêver de réussir dans les arts martiaux. L'histoire de la vie de Francis Ngannou montre que le destin peut réécrire l'histoire de celui qui ose rêver et n'abandonne jamais. Elle affirme également la vérité infaillible selon laquelle chacun devrait permettre à sa douleur d'avoir un but. Francis Ngannou, dans une déclaration à la presse à propos de son succès, a déclaré :
