Anna Mae Bullock known by her stage name as Tina Turner set a record in her 1988 performance at Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, selling over 180,000 tickets. According to the Guinness Book of Records, this made Tina Turner the world record holder for the most concert tickets sold by an artist for a solo performance.
Tina Turner was born on November 26, 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, United States to Floyd Richard Bullock and Zelma Priscilla. She attended Flagg Grove Elementary School and Sumner High School in the Mississippi in 1958. Before beginning her music career Turner picked up a job at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Missouri as a nurse aide.
In 1957, Tina Turner launched into her music career, joining Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm band. Ike Turner was one of the early rock and roll pioneers of the 1950s. He gave Anna Mae Bullock the stage name Tina Turner, with "Tina" inspired from "Sheena, Queen of the Jungle" and his lastname "Turner" as a form of protection, so that if Bullock left him, he could replace her with another "Tina Turner". The couple would form the band Ike & Tina Turner Revue in 1960, which would become a soul/rock crossover hit.
In 1958, Turner appeared in her first record "Box Top" as Little Ann, then first appeared as Tina Turner in the single duet, "A Fool in Love". Working with labels like Sonja, Pompeii, United Artist, Parlophone, Virgin and Capitol, Ike and Tina Turner experienced great success on their hits. The duo worked together on several records including; "River Deep - Mountain High", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "Proud Mary", "I Idolize You", "Tra La La La La", "Poor Fool", "The Gospel According to Ike and Tina", and much more.
In 1976, Ike and Tina parted ways due to Ike's heavy cocaine addiction and domestic violence. Tina had married Ike in Tijuana, Mexico in 1962, and filed for divorce on July 27, 1976. Tina continued her career as a solo artist. Going solo was marred with challenges at the start, but Turner continued making progress.
In 1977, Tina Turner went on tour for her first solo concert in Australia and released her 3rd solo album "Rough" in 1978.
In 1982, Turner filmed a music video for the song "Ball of Confusion", which aired on the popular music channel MTV. She became one of the first African American female artists to be streamed on the channel. This boosted her portfolio and success in her career.
Turner released over 6 solo albums including "Private Dancer" in 1984 which includes the song "What's Love Got to Do with it", Tina Turner's most successful single. The album became her first and only album to chart at No 1 on Billboard Hot 100. She equally worked on the U.S.A. for Africa song, "We are the World". Turner released her 6th solo album, "Break Every Rule", in 1986.
On January 16, 1988, Tina Turner set a record in her performance of the album, "Break Every Rule" at Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, as she sold out more than 180,000 tickets to become the artist with the world ticket record for a solo concert in the Guinness Book of Records. At the time, this was the largest paying solo concert attendance ever for an artist.
Tina Turner, often referred to as The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll is reputed as one of the best-selling artist of all times. She has sold approximately 200 million records worldwide.
Turner is the first black female artist to feature on the cover of Rolling Stone. By the end of her career in 2009, she had received 12 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards.
Turner has a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame and the Holywood Walk of Fame. In 1991, Tina Turner and Ike Turner were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2021 Tina Turner was again inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist.
It should be said that Tina Turner was also a successful movie actress. In the 1985 she was the star opposite of Mel Gibson in the Australian post-apocalyptic action film "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome", the third installment of the Mad Max franchise. The film was a global success and Turner received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress for her role in the film.
